What is food insecurity?

A person is food insecure when they cannot consistently afford enough food for an active, healthy life — often because they must choose between groceries and other basic needs like rent, utilities, or medical bills.

How are the rates calculated?

The food insecurity rate is the estimated percentage of all residents in a county who are food insecure. The child food insecurity rate is the estimated percentage of children under 18 who are food insecure. Both are modeled estimates produced by Feeding America using county-level data on poverty, unemployment, homeownership, and disability — not direct counts.
